President Buhari says he never lost sleep over comments by some people accusing him of being selective in his fight against corruption. The President said this while fielding questions from pressmen in India where he is attending the 3rd Summit of the India-Africa Forum

"I cannot tell you by heart how much we have recovered. For those who are saying I am being selective, if they were not involved in corruption, they wouldn't mind. They will even encourage us to get whoever has compromised his position in the trust giving to him.
So I see it in the papers, I watch it on the screen, but I have never lost a sleep on it because those that are not corrupt should only encourage us to even do more. For those that are interested in the safety of those that have abuse trust in the country will go to any length including bribing people to give false information. I am not being selective. Whoever is caught, the documents that incriminates him or her will be taken to the courts to prosecute him for Nigerians to know who abused trust"he said
Asked if there will be an extension in time limit if the military fails to destroy Boko Haram by December this year, he said
"The main objective is to get rid of boko haram. Whether it is within the time limit we give to the military or outside it, we will maintain and focus on our objective. We will support them. Normally I am an optimistic person. Those that have already given up, I am sorry for them but I remain confident that our military and other law enforcement agencies are more than equal to Boko haram"he said
Reacting to the row about Amaechi's confirmation in the Senate, he said
"This is a team work.  I say I know people but there are people I accept from other people in our team that I trust without even knowing them. Maybe the ones that had problems in the National Assembly, I doubt if I ever met them in my life. I didn't walk into the Presidency alone. I have to depend on all the three tiers of Government,  from all parts of the Country. We cannot walk outside the Constitution which says that there must be a cabinet representative from each State.  There used to be 42 Ministers. I I think we will be lucky if we can have half of that  now because we cannot afford it. Others may not be substantive Ministers but they will sit in the Cabinet because that is what the Constitution says and we cannot operate outside the Constitution".
On whether he will be reducing the number of ministries, he said  "Of course"
On what he will want to be remembered for, Buhari said "If we survive it, I want to be remembered that Nigerians found out that I was genuine, I was a real patriot . Not only that I fought the civil war, I also fought corruption to a standstill" he said

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has described those agitating for the creation of Biafra state as miscreants. Obasanjo said this in an interview with Sahara reporters

"This is a fake agitation. You people make a mountain out of a molehill. These are boys who want to take people unaware and get money out of them in the name of Biafra. These are the people you should ignore, I don’t talk about Biafra. (Philip) Effiong came and said Biafra ceased to exist and since that day, Biafra has ceased to exist. We absorbed those we should absorb both into the civil service and into the military.
Even those we didn’t absorb, who we initially regarded as being retired without benefits, later on we even gave them their benefits. Abandoned houses were returned. Within 10 years of the end of our Civil War, an Igbo man became the vice-president of our country. It took the Americans 100 years before they got to that point. So, what are you talking about? They have held all the ministerial positions existing in this country. We have Igbo as the Governor of Central Bank, Igbo has headed many parastatals in this country.
That’s why these miscreants should be ignored. They want to get money and they go round and say, ‘We are still being victimised. We are still being treated badly in Nigeria,’ so that they can take money from people.”he said

A 38-year-old Zimbabwean man named Titus Maposa has been jailed for forwarding a joke on Mugabe to all his neighbours. According to Manica Post newspaper, Maposa's neighbours sent the text message to the police and he was arrested.
The offending joke was a message falsely attributed to Ecocash, Zimbabwe's mobile money transfer scheme, which said the president had deposited $1 500 (R20 745) into their account.

The newspaper said the message read:
"Ecocash Transfer Confirmation: 1,500 US from Robert Gabriel Mugabe. Thank you for supporting ZANU-PF."

Maposa was being charged under a section of Zimbabwe's Postal and Telecommunications Act prohibiting the sending of messages the sender "knows to be false."

The report said Maposa insisted he did not mean to make his neighbours "anxious or nervous".
"I was intending to share a social media joke," he said.

Although Maposa was not being prosecuted under Zimbabwe's infamous anti-insult laws, it remains a crime to insult Mugabe, who has been in power since 1980. Arrests are frequently reported under these laws, often for comments made on social media site.

Article by Femi Fani-Kayode. Read below :

I am saddened that the former Governor of Kano state, Senator Rabiu Kwakwanso, a man whom I have always considered a friend and one whom I have always respected could insult our reverred Yoruba elders. A few days ago, during a function in Ibadan, it was widely reported in the media that he asserted that the recent demand by the Yoruba elders that all Fulani herdsmen ought to be banned from the south west as a consequence of the hideous atrocities that they have been committing against our people is somehow inappropiate and misguided.

Instead of stopping there he went further by attempting to give us an unsolicited lecture about his Fulani heritage and pedigree and about the benefits of having a good education: imagine that coming from one of them. He concluded by telling the Yoruba elders to just ''shut up''. Such impudence and insolence is rarely seen and this final insult may represent a defining moment in the history of the relationship between the Yoruba and the Fulani in our country.

Worse still, this comes barely a few weeks after Chief Olu Falae, a much-loved 77 year old Yoruba elder, was abducted, incarcerated, stripped naked, beaten, cut with matchetes, maimed, frog-marched, humiliated and kidnapped by a group of Fulani herdsmen. Unlike many others Chief Falae was lucky to escape with his life because both before and since his abduction many other victims of the Fulani cattle rearers did not. These aliens are herdsmen and cattlerearers by the day and terrorists, murderers, vagabonds and rapists by the night.

They have become a terror and an affliction to our people. That is what we have to live with in the south west and many other parts of southern Nigeria today. The Yoruba are still hurting from the abductions, murders, raids and consistent violence being meted out to them by these creatures from hell yet no-one seems to care. Many Yoruba farmers are still living in trepidation of being attacked and butchered by the vagabonds and many have had to sit by helplessly as the heartless beasts raped and slaughtered their wives and daughters before their very eyes.

Instead of attempting to calm our nerves and allay our fears by reaching out to us with an olive branch and condemning the criminal actions of his Fulani kith and kin, Rabiu Kwakawnso has instead indulged in his provocative and dangerous diatribe. It is a manifestation of the crass arrogance that some Fulani leaders have cultivated over the years that they feel that they can insult us in this way and get away with it.

Worse still they seek to defend, rationalise and condone the activities of their barbaric and murderous herdsmen who have murdered, raped and pillaged thousands of our people and forcefully taken our lands and crops over the last few years. I will leave it to Afenifere, the Yoruba Council of Elders, the OPC and others to respond to Kwakwanso and those he represents because these are the groups and people that speak for the Yoruba nation.

The only thing that I will say is that Kwakwanso's thesis and theory about education being the answer to the menace and criminal activities of the Fulani herdsmen in the south west does not make sense. It has no basis in logic, rationality or reason. In any case if the herdsmen are not properly educated and do not know how to behave in a lawful and civilised manner when they are in the territory of others whose fault is that? Is it not the fault of Kwakwanso and the other Fulani leaders who have refused to enlighten and educate their people over the last 50 years?

That is the bitter truth. You cannot stop those herdsmen that have chosen to be murderers, vagabonds and rapists by simply educating them because what they do is inherent within them. Those that have chosen the path of criminality and violence are suffering from a sociopathic and psychotic disposition. Simply put they have an insatiable bloodlust and an irresistible desire to hurt others and to steal, maim, rape and kill.

When I say this I am not referring to all Fulanis but only to those Fulani herdsmen who insist on indulging in violent and deviant behavior in our land. The only thing you can do to stop such people is to make them face the full wrath of the law for the crimes they have consistently committed and ban them from entering our territory. It has nothing to do with education. We do not want these herdsmen amongst us anymore because they are like a plague. All they do is kill, steal and destroy.

They have done it throughout the Middle Belt for the last 50 years and now they are doing it in the south and particularly in Yorubaland. Do Kwakwanso and the other Fulani leaders expect us to keep quiet whilst their people are terrorising, slaughtering and robbing ours? If so they are in for a big shock. We will not only not keep quiet but we will also continue to insist that they must get out of our land. And if the government refuses to protect us from them we shall take strong measures to protect and defend ourselves and our people. There is no crime in self defense. The days of talking down to us, treating us with contempt and treating us like slaves are long over. Kwakwanso and those he represents should not test our will or underestimate our resolve.

We want peace but it cannot be at the expense of our lives and the liberty and safety of our people. The Yoruba cannot be butchered at will or treated like sacrificial lambs to the slaughter by anyone or any group of people. Senator Kwakwanso's insult on the Yoruba elders will not go unanswered. Education is not the solution to the problem of the murderous Fulani herdsmen. Expulsion is. This brings us to the unfolding situation in our country today. It appears that the Fulani leaders of yesteryear were far more honest and forthcoming in the expression of their views and disposition about the south than the ones of today. Let us consider the following. In an essay titled ‘’Nigeria’s History and A Morbid Obsession With Unity’’ written in Vanguard Newspaper on October 6th 2013, Dr. Douglas Anele wrote the following: ‘’Now, it should be pointed out that before the July 29th 1966 (northern military ‘’revenge’’) coup, prominent Northern leaders, led by the Sardauna of Sokoto, much more than their Southern compatriots, disliked the unification or amalgamation of Northern and Southern Nigeria.

For instance, at the inauguration of the Richards Constitution in 1947, Tafawa Balewa, who later became Prime Minister, declared, “We do not want, Sir, our Southern neighbours to interfere in our development. …I should like to make it clear to you that if the British leave Nigeria now at this stage the Northern people will continue their uninterrupted conquest to the sea.” At the General Conference held at Ibadan in January 1950, the Emirs of Zaria and Katsina made it quite clear that “unless the Northern Region is allotted fifty per cent of the seats in the central legislature, it will ask for separation from the rest of Nigeria on the arrangements existing before 1914.”

In March 1953 during a heated debate at the Federal House of Representatives, Ahmadu Bello (who later became Premier of the North region) remarked that “the mistake of 1914 has come to light and I should like it to go no further.” When a delegation from the Action Group decided to visit Kano in May that same year “to educate the Northern peoples about the crisis in the House of Representatives over the self government motion,” Inua Wada, Kano Branch Secretary of the NPC, declared in a speech two days before its scheduled arrival that, ‘’having abused us in the South these very Southerners have decided to come over to the North to abuse us’’. Although the visit was cancelled eventually, it did not prevent the Kano riots in which scores of Ndigbo were murdered’’.

Wada, who later became Minister of Works in Tafawa Balewa’s government, was particularly virulent in his choice of words and many are of the view that his fiery submissions and threats of violence resulted in the Kano riots of 1953 which took place two days later and in which thousands of southerners were slaughtered. To reiterate this point Bobson Gbinije, in his article titled ‘’Igbo and Northern Leaders: Hate and National Cohesion’’ which was published on September 2015, wrote the following: ‘’The invidious and inveterate mutual hatred and antagonisms between Easterners and Northerners through inspired hate speeches and media publications, dates back many years before independence. Sporadic out breaks in Northern towns, particularly the Jos riots of 1945, had been occurring in the past but the British Administration barely took them seriously. However, after the ruthless massacre in Kano in May, 1953 the British were constrained to look into the matter by setting up a commission of inquiry on the Kano disturbances.

The Report on the Kano disturbances posited that the remote causes suggested at the time could not by any means be referred specifically to Easterners. The attacks were attributed to the clash of cultures, the disparities in economic and social development between Northerners and Southerners, the occupation of strategic posts in the administrative, technical and commercial sectors of Northern life by Southerners and the leveling impact of Western religion and political ideologies introduced into the North by Southerners. It is on record that there were series of polemical and aggressive verbal exchanges between Northern Representatives and the Action Group Members during the Lagos Conference. But the fuse that really set off the explosion in May, 1953 was the proposed visit to Kano of an Action Group (AG) delegation led by Chief S. L. Akintola, an Ex-Minister (who was Chief Obafemi Awolowo's deputy and who later became the Premier of the Western Region) .

The organization and preparation of Northerners for the riots did not suggest to Easterners that they would be the main object of the attack. Northerners denied in 1953 that the massacres were ever organized or premeditated. But it is on record that two days before the disturbances began on Thursday, May 14, 1953, Mallam Inua Wada, then Secretary of the Kano Branch of the Northern Peoples Congress (NPC) and later Federal Minister of Works, convened a meeting of the Native Administration sectional heads at the works Department in Kano during which he made a very ill-advised and provocative speech against the proposed visit of the Action Group delegation led by Akintola. Inua Wada said, inter alia, ‘’having abused us in the south these very Southerners have decided to come over to the North to abuse us but we have determined to retaliate the treatment given us in the South. We have therefore organized about 1,000 men ready in the city to meet force with force. We are determined to show to Akintola and his group what we can do in our land when they come. The Northern Peoples Congress has declared a strike in all Native Administration Offices for Saturday, 16th May, 1953. We shall post a sufficient number of men at the entrance of every office and business place and we are prepared to face anything that comes out of this business’’.

Press Statement from APC :

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed the communique issued by the PDP National Caucus on the so-called political developments in the nation as a rehash of the opposition party’s infantile whining which will not save it from going down unless it rebrands most urgently. ”It is time for the PDP to take a long, hard look at itself in the mirror and change everything that is ugly about the party, instead of wasting its energy and time on irrelevancies,” the party said in a statement issued in Lagos on Friday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed.
It said the PDP cannot continue to do things in its trademark old, crooked ways and expect a different result. ”The PDP just doesn’t get it, despite being the architect of its own fall from power. The days of winning elections with the aid of slush funds, brigandage, deceit and rigging are gone forever, hence the PDP must return to the drawing board to fashion out decent and empirical ways of repackaging and selling itself to Nigerians, just like the opposition did when they decided to come together,” APC said

The party said the PDP’s ceaseless and ill-advised attack on the judiciary, now its favourite whipping boy, the endless put-down of government agencies and the demonization of everyone but itself will fetch the party nothing but political grief. ”Instead of a blanket and unsubstantiated accusation against the judiciary over the election petition tribunal rulings in Rivers and Akwa Ibom, the PDP would have shown itself to be a serious party if it had provided statistics on how many of the cases filed at the various election petition tribunals nationwide, after the 2015 elections, have so far been decided in favour of the PDP and the APC, so that Nigerians can see whether the PDP has not won any single petition or whether all the cases have been won by the APC. ”

The PDP has forgotten that the same judiciary that it is willfully castigating today had decided many election petitions in favour of the party and against the APC, whether at the Governorship, National Assembly or State Assembly levels, and the ruling party has not opted to bring the whole house crashing down on everyone just because of that. ”Going down the memory lane, when the PDP took itself to court in 2007 over the Governorship election in Rivers, the same judiciary that has now become an apparition to the PDP awarded the Governorship to a candidate who never even featured on the ballot because the party crookedly substituted his name.

Then, the PDP did not see the judiciary as being used by the then PDP Administration, neither did the opposition castigate the judiciary,” it said. APC admonished the PDP to stop yowling and engage in strategic thinking that could propel the party forward, rather than continue to be nostalgic about its past, which is neither dignifying nor enlivening. ”

The 16 years of the PDP – which the party has continued to shamelessly celebrate – are nothing to celebrate, either for the impunity that characterized the party’s governance, the massive looting of the national treasury that is still being assessed or the bastardization of all the values that the nation holds dear. Thankfully, President Muhammadu Buhari has brought sanity to governance even as the PDP has continued to try to distract him with their endless wailing. ”

Our parting word for the PDP: Stop throwing juvenile tantrums against everyone, especially the judiciary. Stop wasting your energy on frivolous accusations. Learn how to communicate your thoughts to Nigerians in a more civilized way and put your shoulder to the wheel if you want to reincarnate as a force to be reckoned with in our country’s political firmament,” APC said.

PDP Senators say despite the row that followed the confirmation of Rotimi Amaechi yesterday, they still have strong confidence in the leadership of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki. One of the PDP senators, Gershom Bassey who spoke with NAN today, said they will continue to support Saraki as he faces his trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal.
"We have had two votes of confidence on him and they stand. He has the confidence of the Senate and there is absolutely no problem. In spite of the disagreement between the APC and PDP senators, nothing has changed.
In democracy, people must have different points of view and we must express those points of view. The Senate is a vibrant one that has a lot of vibrant debates; the Senate is not a football team that we all have to play in the same direction," he said.
Also speaking, Senator George Sekibo who submitted the petition against Amaechi to the Senate maintained that PDP senators were still behind Saraki.

In an exclusive interview with Sunday Sun at his Minna Hilltop Mansion, Former Head of State Ibrahim Babangida spoke on Buhari's Ministers, Boko Haram, life after power and other sundry issues. While expressing confidence in the calibre of Nigerians chosen to serve in the Buhari cabinet, appealed to Nigerians to support the government and Armed Forces in the fight against Boko Haram.
"First of all, Nigerians should know that it is not a war limited to the North-east. It touches every part of Nigeria and even outside Nigeria. Therefore, the populace must support whatever action the government is taking because it is a Nigerian problem and must be solved by Nigerians. So, I am only appealing to Nigerians to support what the government and Armed Forces are doing. That will go a long way in curtailing this"
Asked what kind of support he had in mind, the former Military president said:
"Let me put it this way. The cause for which Nigerian Armed Forces are fighting is a legitimate cause. Therefore, it has to be supported. If it isn't, nobody would care. It is a legitimate cause, and all of us, as long as you are a Nigerian, you have to support that cause"

He however noted that praising the Army and the Government is not the only way to show support.

"Well, praising, I don't think it is the only support we can give. Maybe you were a small boy in 1967 during the civil war. You would find that Nigerians were mobilized to support that war and every citizen was making one contribution or the other, in kind, moral or material support. So, it entails material support and moral support in fighting such a cause"

According to reports, the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sunusi II, has stripped the eldest son of late Emir of Kano, Ado Bayero, Lamido Bayero, of his traditional title of Ciroman Kano and District Head of Gwale.

.

According to Premium Times, a few months after ascending the throne, Emir Sanusi wrote to Bayero asking him to return to his duty as Ciroman Kano and District Head of Gwale but he got no reply from the late former Emir's son and neither did he report to the palace, which angered Sanusi.

“When a letter was written to him again, he neither responded nor appeared in person to explain his reasons. His Highness first reasoned that the local government of Gwale was too important to be left vacant, and so he elevated the son of Emir Inuwa to be the district head. And now the title of Ciroma is also stripped,” a top palace source said.
Emir Sanusi then appointed Lamido Bayero’s younger brother, Nasiru Bayero, to replace him as the new Ciroman Kano.

A statement by Galadiman Kano, Abbas Sunusi, said the removal and the subsequent replacement were with immediate effect. Mr. Bayero was touted to as the heir apparent of the Kano emirship throne but lost to the current emir, who was then holding a mid-cadre title of Dan Majen Kano.

Bayero was later appointed managing director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, by former President Jonathan but was removed by president Buhari.

Since losing the coveted seat to Emir Sanusi, Lamido has removed himself from Kano and now permanently lives in Abuja. He has also refused to pledge allegiance to the new emir as provided by the tradition.

According to Punch The CP said the robbers mainly disguise as street traders, adding that motorists shouldn't patronise hawkers at night.
He said:
“One of the areas where the government has challenges is the issue of traffic robbery. We will not shy away from the fact that we have had pockets of robbery in traffic in recent times.
“In a day, I receive about four tweets of traffic robbery. I monitor this personally and I give directions and instructions immediately. When I newly came to Lagos, I used to receive about 10 robbery tweets in a day. It is improving now, and it will continue to improve.
“We made arrests in Oworonshoki, Apongbon and Onikan areas last week and there were about 144 suspects. Items recovered from the hoodlums include charms, machetes, locally-made guns and valuables of victims.
“The most recent traffic robbery recorded was carried out by someone selling snacks on the road. So, the message is that motorists should be careful when patronising street traders.”
He added:
“Our enforcement on the ban on commercial motorcycles is ongoing. The challenge with Lagos is that about 500 new motorcycles enter our roads every day. But the police have not stopped enforcing this law.
“We will also start to enforce the law that states that anyone carrying any object defined by the law as a weapon is arrested and charged to court. Therefore, members of the public must be careful.
“As the end of the year draws near, the police reiterate that there will be no use of fireworks, bangers and items that sound like explosives in any part of the state. They are all prohibited.”

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the North-East Humanitarian Multi-Stakeholders Engagement on Tuesday in Maiduguri, the Chairman of the Presidential Committee on North-East Intervention, Gen. Theophilus Danjuma, said N233bn was needed for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the communities ravaged by the Boko Haram sect.

The chairman of PCNI, who was represented by a member of the committee, Mohammed Danjuma, said the rebuilding of the ravaged states needed proper coordination to alleviate the sufferings of the Internally Displaced Persons.

He said the Federal Government and other stakeholders are determined to manage the humanitarian crisis in the region, adding that the IDPs would return to their communities after the reconstruction of their destroyed communities.

VP Osinbajo said::
This region has suffered tremendously in the past six years. It has suffered from the destruction of infrastructure, farmlands, businesses, trades, the destruction of schools and the loss of school years.
“Rebuilding, restoring and rehabilitation will cost money and time. But neither money nor time can fix the trauma of loss of family members, relations and friends, the shame of the raped, the scars and fears of parents of the abducted and the kidnapped, the bewilderment that comes with loss of homes, possessions and livelihoods and the pains of hundreds of thousands of orphaned children.”
“The tasks before us are many and profound, to fix brick and mortar and to mend hearts and minds damaged by senseless murderous violence. But we are called not just to mend the hearts and minds of the victims but also of their traducers, and killers.
“The young men and women who have been brainwashed to kill, maim and destroy in the warped belief that by so doing they please God, they are also victims. Indeed, these perpetrators are themselves victims, trapped in the vortex of evil manipulation, compelled to dehumanise themselves as they shed the blood of the innocent.
“It is our duty to deconstruct the narrative that causes men to kill children on their beds at a boarding school at night even as we degrade the military capacity of the insurgents. The tasks are indeed many and profound.
“But while there is still so much to do, much has been done already. The many civil society groups, funding partners, regional and international partners who have given of their time, resources and even their lives in some cases, deserve to be commended. But for you, first responders, we would have been far worse off than we are today.”
He added, “We are in Maiduguri to show humanity and to give milk of human kindness to our brothers and sisters who for six years have been ravaged by Boko Haram insurgency by killing, maiming and abduction of innocent people.”
